Pumpkin Composting

November 1, 2025 Marisa Lomonaco

The Beacon Composting Program is collection pumpkins at the Recreation Center drop-off location all month long in November. Drop-off your pumpkin in the large white sack with the Pumpkins labels in order to help keep the weight of our normal municipal bins down! The Beacon Recreation is located 23 West Center Street, in Beacon, NY.

Why Compost your Pumpkins?

Over one billion pounds of pumpkins are landfilled annually in the United States. When pumpkins are disposed of in landfills, they decompose without oxygen (anaerobically), and bacteria produce methane as a byproduct. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, considered about 25-80 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.
